Beyond the Comfort Zone

Frank Rudy, an accomplished aeronautical engineer, transformed the shoe industry with his introduction of Air cushioning technology to Nike in 1977. This technology utilized gas-filled pockets in the sole of the shoe which provided runners with a more comfortable and responsive ride. The Nike Tailwind shoe quickly became a part of Nike's legacy as it was the first shoe to incorporate this advanced feature in 1978. The Tailwind line has continued to evolve and has become an essential part of Nike's history with subsequent iterations of the shoe incorporating new materials and technologies. Frank Rudy's out-of-the-box thinking achieved what others believed to be impossible and subsequently contributed to Air becoming an ubiquitous technology now found in over 50% of Nike footwear.

Window to Innovation

No technology is as synonymous with Nike as Air. This includes the AirMax, which is recognized not only for its striking design, but also for its distinctive approach to engineering for impact. Our legendary designer Tinker Hatfield was inspired to create the OG Air Max 1 during a trip to Paris, where he visited the Pompidou Centre. The building's transparent exterior and exposed structural elements moved Hatfield and his team to create a shoe that would showcase its internal workings and technology. Today, the AirMax line remains a popular and influential part of our product line, with these design elements serving as a symbol of the brand's commitment to teamwork, innovation and design excellence.

Breaking Barriers

Greatness is measured in fractions of seconds. That's why we created the Air Zoom AlphaFly NEXT%, a shoe designed specifically for elite runners who want to push the boundaries of performance footwear. We worked closely with Eliud Kipchoge, one of the greatest marathon runners of all time, to develop a shoe that would enhance his running performance and help him achieve his goal of breaking the 2-hour marathon barrier. The shoe utilized innovative technology such as a carbon fiber plate, lightweight foam midsole, and responsive Air Zoom pods to maximize energy return and propulsion. The low profile air technology is made up of tightly-stretched tensile fibers that compress upon impact and then quickly snap back to their original state, providing a powerful response that allows athletes to exceed their own expectations. The Air Zoom AlphaFly NEXT% has become a highly sought-after shoe among runners who want to improve their running experience and break their personal records. As we look to the future of sports and performance, we remain at the forefront of innovation, constantly striving to create products that help athletes surpass their limits and reach new heights of greatness.
